I’m With You, Man.

This was in a food court about a 45 second walk from our hotel. That’s right, “our” hotel. I brought my dad along for the trip. We arrived about 1:30a local time. The travel was about 21 hours from our front door to the hotel lobby.

India

By Sean Flanigan

In February 2007, I traveled to India with a 5D, 24L & 85L.
-
The experience truly shaped me as a photographer. Most days there I’d go out only wielding the 24. This forced me in close and made me think about the images I wanted. Approaching a stranger and telling them you’re going to be photographing them a few inches from their face isn’t the easiest thing to do. A lot of the time I was afraid and wanted to hesitate. I was able to overcome those feelings by a stronger desire to make a good image. One of the only things that sticks with me to this day from photo school is something one of my instructors said. “Frame you’re shot up, then take a huge step closer.” He was right, take a huge step toward your subject and then snap.
-
After my trip to India I came home with a new approach to weddings. I was going to get closer, close enough to shoot with my 24 and fill the frame. Today I shoot life, weddings, friends, family and everything up close. Personal and intimate.
-
I have India to thank for such a growing experience.
-
I’m headed to Singapore tomorrow morning for 8 days. I’ll be working 3 out of the 8 leaving me with 5 free days to explore. I haven’t had that kind of time to photograph for myself since this India trip. I am excited, I can’t wait to fall back in love with my craft. I’ll be back in town on the 19th. Until then.

Jonas & Sean. A Workshop.

By Sean Flanigan

I spent all of last week near Brisbane, Australia with my good friend Jonas Peterson. I initially planned on heading down under to have a bit of a break from the busy season I had, to recuperate & to enjoy time with friends.
-
Jonas & I got to talking a bit about putting together a workshop while I was in town and within a few days after our initial discussion we launched the registration and were sold out within a few hours- This blows my mind. I’m always shocked at the talent level of photographers that come to learn from me & my friends. I was humbled by our attendees and so happy to have made new friends. I walked away gaining so much from this experience myself, maybe more than the guests. I absolutely love sharing with other passionate & creative people, I am so thankful for my work & the fact I get to do something I love.
-
Thank you new friends.
-
Some technical stuff. The above frames were from our demo shoot during the workshop. You should have seen me in that heat & humidity. Someone as myself from the Pacific Northwest region of the United States kinda melts on an Australian summer day.
I used VSCO FILM on all of the above frames. HP5+ & Portra 800.
-
Samm & Dan. If you don’t know them you should. They guest spoke for Jonas & I. Their passion for their craft & art is apparent right off the bat, it’s inspiring to say the least. They truly blew me away with the presentation they shared.
-
I had an absolute blast everyone. Thank you so much.
-
In Jonas’ words. “Can we do it again?”
