My friends over at VSCO have been hard at work developing the new VSCO FILM, FILM PACK 03. Since last week, I’ve gotten a chance to play around with the presets. I found that they react so different in varied lighting situations. Above, I pulled images from a shoot with full sun, sun breaks, overcast light, & total shade- to give a good idea of what to expect from the new Film Pack.

Presets used.
-
Polaroid 665 HC
Polaroid 669 COLD
Fuji FB 100
Fuji FP 100 COOL ++
PX 100 UV+ WARM++
Polaroid 699 ++
-
The only customization I made to any of the above looks, was I desaturate the toned B&W looks.
-
For your comparison- Here is Chris & Nate’s portraits I processed with Photoshop more than 1.5 years ago.
-
I see myself really enjoying these for personal work.
-
I am happy to keep a dilague going in the comments area.

    i love how they look on full sun shots (which i always love real instants for, too) but not so much the overcast. the skin tones are just not as flattering. “personal work” seems to sum up the consensus. i can’t quite imagine me using them on clients, but i love all the examples i’ve been seeing that other people are doing (these included).

    Thank you for your post. I would just say that theses preset are nice, but now I’m practising a little wedding photography, I refused to use them because all wedding photographers works look like the same, it kills creativity according to me. That’s why I post process all my photos manually, so I’m sure my post process style is unique. (Specially for the b&w presets, I don’t agree VSCO when they said they simulate analog films, I have a leica M3 and I can tell you that my tri-X shots don’t look like the tri-X preset at all !) But I don’t want to say that freely, and I want your opinion about that (here an example of a work without presets : http://izaacphotography.blogspot.fr/2012/09/grace-mon-cher-ami-ricardo-photographe.html) Thanks for reading !

    Hey Sean, thanks for sharing. I like your Photoshop – edited version better, because I don’t think those new “instant” looks really add much to the photographs. To me “instant / film ” is not as much about the colours as it is about slight distortions, dust, imperfections, and the way they are shot – fitting candid shots perfectly. I like the hug frame with cross process and extra faded effect.. Don’t think vignette and purple colouring fit shots like the landscape one.. I also think VSCO should not come at us with several hundreds of new presets – but on the opposite reduce the number and find a better way to customise each one, such as generalising the grain and contrast settings via the toolkit rather than having +, ++, – versions for each film.. no? By the way, congrats on making the top ten wedding photographers list!! :)

    These look beautiful. We were excited for VSCO 03 for our personal work, but it’s great to see the presets applied to a session. Thanks for sharing.

    Great pictures! The new package is great. Personally I enjoy the Fuji FP 100c, Fuji FP 3000b Negative Early Pull (really gritty bw look) and Polaroid 669.

    Favorites for indoor photography??

    His work is strong, congratulations! About the new VSCO Film 3, I am fascinated by the work done. As you said, it’s amazing how each film behaves so differently in different light situations. I’m so excited with all possibilities!

    sean, these are gorgeous. i love all of them. you make the slightly more “amateur” processing of the 03 set look real and accessible. so very inspiring.

    Hey man, I bought these presets after seeing you use them. Having said that, I would love to be able to buy some of yours if you ever make them.

    in the area that says what presets you used, some of them are not in the film pack, just a heads up.
